Goodness gracious it's been ages since I last posted any fic. That happens when I get horribly depressed, though. I'm on meds and stabilizing now, so maybe writing will happen again soon. In the meantime have a little thing I wrote about Dylan Gould. I didn't much care for him the first time I saw DotM, but then I realized that he's the Decepticon version of Daniel. He grew up with Uncle Soundwave and Uncle Laserbeak. His motivations in the movie make total sense when you realize that it isn't about glory or power, it's about family. A very twisted, horrible kind of family, but family. Poor dear.

"Good night, kiddo." His dad pulls up the covers, nestling him into a cocoon of blankets. It’s cold, frost riming the old windowpanes, so he doesn’t mind. He’s still warming up from making too many snowballs without his mittens, despite the hot cocoa he’s had since.

"Good night, Daddy," he mumbles, the soft sheets and pillows already tugging him into sleep. "Good night, birdie."

The two red lights atop his dresser blink once. It shifts with a reassuring rustle.

"Good night, little Dylan," it coos. "Sleep well."

His dad pats the covers one last time. When the door closes behind him, the only light left in the room is red. It watches Dylan unblinkingly. He rolls over to face it, staring back for as long as he can.

"Birdie?"

"Yes, Dylan."

"Are you going to sleep?"

"No, Dylan."

"...Will you watch for monsters?"

It clicks its beak together, hiss-laughing delightedly. "Yes, Dylan."

"Okay. Good night, birdie."

"Sweet dreams, Dylan."

I love this! I'd never thought about it like that before, but now that you've made this point, I'm re-evaluating DOTM. Very happy about this too. :D

Laserbeak saying it'll watch out for the monsters at the end was priceless!

Hahaha, oh man, I wish it was in DotM! It's mostly implied. Dylan says that Soundwave and Laserbeak were his father's clients, and that he "inherited" them, and if they were there for the moon landings as he said then yeah, they've been in the family since right about when Dylan was born. He certainly seems comfortable and familiar with them. He speaks to Soundwave almost as an equal. idk, just a lot of little things that my mind ran with when I was trying to figure out Dylan's motivations.

I always thought fandom was being kinda hard on the guy - after all if the Decepticons could make Sam betray Optimus with torture and threatening his One True Love, who knows what they did to Dylan? Wonderful (scary!) little fic!

I've actually never really seen much discussion of Dylan. But yeah, even if you don't think he sees them as family, what did they do to him for years and years and years? And all the other people at his party, my gosh. Soundwave is quite clever. I think the absence of details is better than if it had been explicitly stated.

Very cool story. It makes me want to go watch DotM right now just to find out more about Dylan and what Decepticon human relations are like when the humans are actually useful and co-operative.

Also, wow, I didn't think DotM could be any more depressing, but you've managed it. (Now I'm feeling a bit sympathetic to Dylan, who's death had been pretty much the only unmixed "yay!" in the movie for me.)
