Starscream is Starscream, there's no changing that! It's just a matter of the balance of his personality traits. He's fluid, he can go any which way, and it's utterly fantastic to play up one trait or another. Saying "okay, the utter crack of G1 canon (Megatron tripped! I AM RULER OF THE DECEPTICONS) can be explained as a misbalance of those traits" is kinda weird and I don't usually like it, but this was just so fun to write. I see why other people retcon canon like this. XD
Prime has his heart set on fixing things! He likes fixing! And he's right, by doing this and acknowledging that it gives him no hold over Starscream, he's won some favor. And I think Starscream with recognized authority, respected as he desires, would be extremely capable and quite possibly he'd just ignore the Autobots altogether for being beneath his notice. Which is a backwards kind of peace, but Optimus will take it!
The scene with Ratchet, Ironhide, and Optimus... I expected it to be so hard to write. But it just flowed. They knew their stances (except perhaps Ratchet, who give equal weight to both arguments) and weren't going to change their minds, and Ironhide forced Optimus' hand - it HAD to boil down to an order rather than a consensus. Poor Optimus.
